The
Public Purpose of Education
In
the Movie Billy Madison from the 90’s, Billy is given the opportunity to take
over the family business but he needs to prove that he can run the family
business by making it through all 12 grades, 2 weeks per grade. Billy must have
an education so it will look better to the public for him and his father’s
company. One of the scenes in the movie Billy pretends to have mental problems
or be an idiot at a diner with his father business workers. A little after that the workers are playing
pool and they are talking about when Billy will get himself together to run his
father company with an education. His father even said “oh Billy when are you
going to get yourself together”. This show that society looks upon us better or
worse depending on what kind of education we have, they give us more respect
and most people want that. In this paper I will discuss how the society now we
look at people achievements they have done throughout their life to see if they
are qualify or deserve the job or career they are pursuing. Anyone can run a company, that doesn’t mean
they will run it the best, having an education will give you somewhat of an
advantage but having experience is what you really need. Society doesn’t care about your experience,
as much as your education you had, so that’s why most people strive for an
education. The main purpose of education
is financial stability in my opinion.
Most
of us go to college for financial stability because we want to do well in life.
The Government provides us with student loans, Finical Aid and all these ways
to get us through college. They also provide us with community college, it’s
cheaper than a University and the environment is just better for people at the
Community College. The State tries their best to fund us for college. Yes,
College has been easier for everyone to go through with the help of the
government, but why is the government helping us? Well the answer is simple; they want all of
us to have the opportunity to have a higher education. The state already is
providing free education for us with elementary school, middle school and high
school to prepare us for college. Doing
this we go for higher jobs or go for jobs that are needed in society. “Roosevelt said we entrust the building of
our children’s whom we, as a rule” (Roosevelt 4). I think Roosevelt is saying if you closely
look at why the government makes education so easy to us now, If we get a free
education most people can’t resist, as they grow up their culture or society
around them influences them for their career and the United States always needs
more people for jobs that require education not a regular job at a fast food
restaurant. Education is important for
us because it will help us get jobs, our critical thinking skills will be
better and our self-achievements will better.
A
Personal Purpose of Education: Why it Matters?
There
are many private and public reasons for people to go to college for a higher
education. The main purpose of education in my eyes is for the fulfillments of
completing 4 years of college or more. Franklin D states, “It can do much in directing thought and
formulating standards”(6). Most College student go to college due to the fact
their parents talked about how college is the right choice or they see their
friends going to College so they followed. College students find that getting
an education in that skills set is best for them because the other skills they
are good at isn’t financially stable for them.
Many are motivated to go to College because they have this dream they
will be successful right out of college no matter what or some think I owe a
lot of money now but I’ll make more money later so I will be able to pay It
back quickly. Pride or self-achievement is one of the biggest factors for going
to a big University, since they want their friends and family to be proud or
jealous of them and they want to feel good about themselves. A Majority of us
are getting an education because it’s an opportunity most people either can’t
resist or need. The fact we need a
community in our College makes it better for us and more motivated for an
education.
Sir
Robinson got his PhD at the University of London and has been a professors at
University of Warwick for 12 years. In Sir Ken Robinson talk he said, “we live
in a community of people. We have to be able to relate and function with
diversity. The arts, especially music, express our inter-connectedness”. Robinson describes that if we didn’t have all
these influences the society wouldn’t be as big and opened as it is now. . Robinson also talks about the public and
personal purpose of education is inter-connected and essential. I also think he
is telling us without a community our minds won’t expand; therefore we won’t
always be trying new things or getting introduced to different opinions. We all need some culture or diversity in our
life to evolve as a society or individual. The College Board said the” college
boards mission is to connect students to collage success and opportunity”. The College Board is trying to provide chances
or a community for the students so they can expand there culture.
There ware two types of Purpose of
Education, one being personal and the other being public reason. The main purpose of education that was
personal was a sense of a community and culture for the students. A public reason was financial stability
because its what will get us through life.
Sir Robinson, Roosevelt and the College Board provided much useful
information about these points. Those
are the two main reasons why people mainly go to college.
